Packing List
All trek participants will arrive the morning of June 16th in their regular clothing. These clothes will be worn all day during the drive and arrival/set-up at Martin’s Cove. Friday morning all participants will dress in pioneer clothing. The pioneer clothing will be worn for the duration of the trek that day. Once back at camp, all participants will change back into their regular clothing. Each participant will need one pioneer outfit for trek.
*Martin’s Cove has asked that all participants wear pants, instead of shorts, given the nature of the activity and the bugs, snakes, etc. around the area.

Trek Clothing
All participants should gather 1 set of pioneer clothing to wear during our trek on Friday. Dressing in period clothing helps participants immerse themselves in the trek experience. It can also foster a sense of unity among the youth and help remove social barriers that may exist. In obtaining or making pioneer clothing, leaders and youth should not spend excessive time or money. Many items can be found in existing wardrobes or at secondhand stores. Youth leaders and previous trek participants would also be great resources for borrowing needed items.
To help protect from sun and insects, participants are encouraged to wear long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats or bonnets, and sunglasses.
Women's Clothing
- 1 Skirt (or Dress) – dress or skirt should not be longer than the top of your shoes to prevent tripping on them when walking up hill
- 1 long-sleeve, button-up blouses (3/4 length sleeves are ok)
- 1 bonnet or sunhat/straw hat
- 1 apron, optional. Pockets are useful.
- 2 pair of socks, wool preferred
- 1 pair of tennis or hiking shoes. Be sure that your tennis shoes or boots are broken in BEFORE Trek.*
- Crocs or other water shoes as we may be crossing through water and your shoes will get wet.
Men's Clothing
- 1 pair of pants. Khaki, blue, gray, brown are common pioneer colors. Cotton, Corduroy, Twill, and Canvas pants that are loose fitting are good choices.
- 1 pioneer style long-sleeve, button-up shirts (tip:cut the collar off a collared shirt for the pioneer look), loose fitting for easy movement.
- 1 Straw or Wide Brimmed Hat
- 1 pair of suspenders or 1 vest (optional)
- 2 pair of socks, wool preferred
- 1 pair of tennis or hiking shoes. Be sure that your tennis shoes or boots are broken in BEFORE Trek.*
- Crocs or other water shoes as we may be crossing through water and your shoes will get wet.
*To help reduce the likelihood of blisters, participants are encouraged to wear walking or hiking shoes that are broken in and two pairs of socks during the trek. Ideally the inner sock is thin and synthetic, while the outer sock is wool or a wool blend. Socks that wick away moisture are the most helpful. Socks that are a wool-synthetic blend can also help reduce the potential for blisters.
